Music for Alzheimer's

HOW YOUR DONATION OF OLD STEREO EQUIPMENT WILL HELP THE CLEVELAND ALZHEIMERS ASSOCIATION...

Music For Alzheimer'sCleveland, OH--A trip to the beach with friends, that special family vacation in the mountains, your child's first Christmas. All treasured memories that make us smile each time we think of them. What would happen to that smile if all of these memories were taken away?

Alzheimer's disease steals these memories and more from the nearly 5 million Americans, including 44,000 Northeast Ohioans, with the disease. Audio Craft is working with Cleveland Area Chapter of Alzheimer's Association to make a difference in the lives of area people with Alzheimer's again this holiday season.

Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. People with Alzheimer's experience confusion, personality and behavior changes, impaired judgment and difficulty finding words, finishing thoughts or following directions.

In past years, Audio Craft sponsored Audio Equipment for Alzheimer's as a way to collect stereo equipment used for music therapy in area Alzheimer's units last Christmas. "The response to the 'Albums for Alzheimer's' program was tremendous," Audio Craft owner Wayne Puntel said. "People in the Cleveland area made such an impact with their donations that we exceeded the need for equipment at nursing homes and adult day care centers in the area. This year, we are excited to broaden our efforts to include raising funds for the Cleveland Area Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association."

The Cleveland Area chapter provides area families with a wide variety of services including a network of family support groups, and information hotline and an educational newsletter.

"These services are incredibly helpful to the person providing in-home care for a friend or relative with Alzheimer's," Alzheimer's Association Executive Director Mary Schwendeman said.

The Cleveland Area chapter now provides an Alzheimer's Disease Support Center on their web site. Information and support is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Alzheimer's Disease Support Center includes a Caregiver Forum, a computerized support; the Information Rack, an on-line library; and the Question & Answer section, where health care professionals answer questions. The Alzheimer's Association will train families to use the system and loan equipment to caregivers at no charge.

"The Alzheimer's Disease Support Center is available 24 hours a day. Some caregivers find themselves on the system at 2:00 a.m. when they have had a particularly difficult night," said Schwendeman. "Although they wouldn't call another caregiver at this time, they can freely get on the computer and send a message. Then they feel relief and can return to bed."

In order to continue with this free service, the Cleveland Area Alzheimer's Associations needs financial support.

Audio Craft continues to raise money for the Cleveland Area Chapters of the Alzheimer's Association. Audio Craft is collecting used, working stereo equipment.

All the donations will be distributed to the caregivers and nursing homes, or will be sold.

"One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sales of used, working stereo equipment will directly benefit the Cleveland Area Chapters of the Alzheimer's Association," Puntel said. "Everyone looks for ways to give support to this worthy cause."

Equipment donations can be brought to any Audio Craft store location. Click here for store locations.
